Professors:
♦ Hervé Joulain
Solohorn in the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris.
Joulain is one of the most highly demanded horn soloists and chamber musician of the music world. He developed an ecpecially interresting teaching system and edited a horn method.
♦ Samuel Seidenberg
Solohorn for many years in the Symphony Orchestra of Hessischer Rundfunk Frankfurt, now Professor for Horn at the Musikhochschule Mannheim.
Seidenberg is an outstanding example of the good German Horn School.
♦ William Vermeulen
Solohorn in the Houston Symphony Orchestra in Texas and Professor for Horn at Rice University in Houston.
Vermeulen is a worldwide highly demanded horn soloist and a horn teacher with legendary success. He already brought more then 1000 students into orchestral positions.
♦ Engelbert Schmid
From 1978 to 1988 Solohorn Munich Radio Orchestra, will teach himself as many hours as the organisation of the horn days and the running horn production will allow him to do.

Dopo aver suonato con la Radiosymphonieorchester di Berlino e la Berliner Philharmoniker Orchester, Engelbert Schmid è stato per dieci anni corno solista della Münchner Rundfunkorchester. Nel 1980 ha esposto al pubblico per la prima volta i propri strumenti e nel 1990 ha fondato l’azienda che ne porta il nome. In qualità di Maestro artigiano, forma personalmente tutti gli artigiani che lavorano con sé.
Esperienza e passione
Il catalogo degli strumenti comprende soltanto i modelli davvero utili e necessari, ciò che mette immediatamente in luce tutto il sapere e la passione di un cornista esperto. Le combinazioni con il mib acuto richiedono una trattazione a parte (vedi il paragrafo 8 a pagina 20). Il corno in sib di tutti i corni Schmid può essere abbassato al la o innalzato al si naturale. Sul primo si possono suonare i passaggi scritti per corno in mi con le posizioni del corno in mib (Concertino di Weber, Concerto di Danzi, Fidelio, La gazza ladra, Così fan tutte, per esempio).
In modo analogo, sul secondo si possono suonare con le stesse posizioni i passaggi tecnicamente difficili per corno in re\, come per esempio il terzo movimento del primo Concerto di Haydn. I brani in mi che venivano talvolta suonati con il corno in la risultano migliori sul corno in si naturale.
Il segreto del suono
I corni Schmid sono disponibili con la campana di cinque diversi diametri: piccola, "kompakt", media ( = "golden cut" ), larga e "Hollywood Sound" (quelle più richieste sono la "kompakt", "golden cut" e la larga). La differenza fra media e larga sta soltanto nell’ultima parte di essa il che, se la campana è svitabile, rende semplice passare dall’una all’altra. Molti cornisti, infatti, decidono di acquistarne due diverse per alternarle in funzione del tipo di musica da suonare.
La campana è disponibile in quattro leghe diverse: brass, goldbrass, nickelsilver e sterling silver. Completano la scelta ed ampliano ulteriormente lo spettro sonoro le campane decorate con un anello applicato e la campana martellata a mano a partire da un unico pezzo di metallo lavorato secondo un’antica edifficile tradizione.
Un’interessante possibilità per il registro acuto nelle piccole orchestre da camera o nelle composizioni barocche è la campana nel classico diametro viennese di 28cm o addirittura 25cm anziché 31cm. Le dimensioni delle campane si basano su modelli storici referenziati, ma sono state corrette al computer per raggiungere i seguenti obiettivi: un suono più nobile, più chiaro, più radioso e vario; uno strumento che guadagna in efficacia, precisione, affidabilità, stabilità e intonazione. Uno strumento versatile che stimola la creatività musicale.

Una squadra, una filosofia
Le idee più formidabili e le teorie migliori non servono a nulla se non vengono messe in pratica.
Engelbert Schmid ha presentato i propri strumenti al pubblico per la prima volta nel 1980. Nel 1990, mentre si diplomava Maestro artigiano, ha fondato l’azienda omonima a Tiefenried, in Baviera. In anni di tenace perseveranza ha formato personalmente una squadra di artigiani di prim’ordine, e nel 1995 ha raggiunto lo standard qualitativo che si era prefissato.
Nel 2005 ha trasferito l’azienda nella nuova e più spaziosa sede di Mindelzell, e in due anni il personale è raddoppiato da 7 a 14 artigiani, e continua a crescere.
